Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation
The Daintree Rainforest is a vast World Heritage listed wilderness area occupying Australia’s north east peninsula, much of which remains inaccessible to visitors. Existing continuously for more than 110 million years, it represents the largest surviving tract of tropical lowland rainforest in the country.
The area is rich in flora and fauna, including many rare and ancient species – indeed it contains the highest number of plant and animal species anywhere in the world. As well as forest, there are rivers, waterfalls and beaches, and popular destinations include Cape Tribulation, Cooktown and Cape York. Cape Tribulation is the meeting point between the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The region can be explored through treks, four-wheel drive safaris, and river cruises, and accommodation ranges from basic to deluxe spa lodges.
Cape York, one of Australia’s last great wilderness regions, is the northernmost tip of mainland Australia and only visited by the intrepid traveller willing to embark on and extended 4WD trek through the wilderness.
Those who do make the journey are rewarded with spectacular rainforest exploration, encompassing the sights and sounds of the Daintree, Lakefield and Jardine National Parks, including historic Cooktown, frontier towns, Aboriginal rock art, telegraph stations, waterfalls, billabongs, and wildlife. Here visitors will find some of the most spectacular and rugged scenery in all Australia, as well as plenty of cultural heritage and aboriginal history.
